  • Conference on "Philosophy and Revelation" in celebration of the centenary of Herman Bavinck's Stone Lectures (2009)

The purpose of this conference – which will open with a lecture by Prof Alvin Plantinga, winner of the Kuyper Prize for 2009 -  is to celebrate the centenary of Herman Bavinck’s Stone Lectures by bringing theologians and philosophers into conversation on the very wide range of topics that Bavinck thought to be relevant to assessing the nature and status of revelation as a source of knowledge in a world increasingly dominated by empiricist epistemology.

  • Conference on "Common Grace and 'A Common Word'" (2010)

‘Common grace’ is a key concept in the thought of Kuyper and Bavinck. It signals a conceptual space in which the grace of God is to be found at work in people, spheres and institutions outside the Church and beyond the extended circle of Christian believers. Kuyper’s account of his Mediterranean journey of 1905-1906 includes a description of his encounters with Jews and Muslims, and Bavinck expressly found common grace at work in other religions. A Common Word Between Us and You is the title of a document affirming the common ground that exists between Christianity and Islam. Issued in October 2007 and addressed to the leaders of all the world’s churches, it was signed by 138 Muslim scholars, clerics and intellectuals from every denomination and school of thought in Islam.
