Common Grace and 'A Common Word' (2010)
April 15-17, 2010
- Princeton, New Jersey

"Common grace" is a key concept in the thought of Kuyper and Bavinck. It signals a conceptual space in which the grace of God is to be found at work in people, spheres and institutions outside the Church and beyond the extended circle of Christian believers. The purpose of this conference is to explore the concept of common grace with a view to uncovering the theological role it might have in furthering the aspirations of A Common Word Between Us and You, a 2007 document affirming the common ground that exists between Christianity and Islam.

Paper proposals in the disciplines of theology, religious studies, history, philosophy and the social sciences are invited on any aspect of the conference theme. Papers that aim to extend the dialogue to include Judaism in all its varieties are especially welcome.

Calvinism and Culture (2011)
April 14-16, 2011
- Princeton, New Jersey

Abraham Kuyper (1837-1920) – Dutch pastor, theologian, journalist and politician -- was instrumental in the revival of Calvinism as a world view worthy of practical allegiance and sustained critical reflection. In 1898 he visited Princeton and delivered the Stone Lectures that year, his famous Lectures on Calvinism. The fifth of these lectures was devoted to the relation between Calvinism and the arts. The purpose of this conference is part historical – to explore the ways in which Calvinism both influenced and was influenced by the arts of literature, painting, music and architecture – and part critical – to explore the ways in which Reformed theology understands the value of the arts and their relation to Christian practice .

Paper proposals are invited in the disciplines of theology, religious studies, art history, philosophy and musicology on any aspect of the conference theme.
