"CALVINISM AND CULTURE"
PRINCETON, NEW
JERSEY
April 14-16, 2011
Abraham Kuyper (1837-1920) – Dutch pastor, theologian, journalist and politician -- was instrumental in the revival of Calvinism as a world view worthy of practical allegiance and sustained critical reflection. In 1898 he visited
Princeton
and delivered the Stone Lectures that year, his famous Lectures on Calvinism. The fifth of these lectures was devoted to the relation between Calvinism and the arts. The purpose of this conference is part historical -- to explore the ways in which Calvinism both influenced and was influenced by the arts of literature, painting, music and architecture – and part critical – to explore the ways in which Reformed theology understands the value of the arts and their relation to Christian practice. The conference will open with a lecture by the winner of the Kuyper Prize for 2011 (to be announced).
PAPER PROPOSALS are invited in the disciplines of theology, religious studies, art history, philosophy and musicology on any aspect of the conference theme. Proposals from graduate students are especially welcome, and financial support is available. Each block of concurrent sessions will include a session reserved for a graduate student paper.
Proposals should take the form of an abstract of not more than 300 words and be submitted as an email attachment to kuyper.center@ptsem.edu by
December 1st, 2010. Decisions will be notified by mid-January, 2011.
