Printed Writings of Jonathan Edwards

The Printed Writigns of Jonathan Edwards, 1703-1758, A Bibliography by Thomas H. Johnson, Revised Edition by M. X. Lesser, Studies in Reformed Theology and History, Princeton Theological Seminary, 2003. Sale price: $25.00 USD

In 1940, Thomas H. Johnson published a bibliography of the writings of Jonathan Edwards printed between 1731 and 1935. He did so “without apology.” After all, Johnson suggested, “During his lifetime he achieved considerable rank, both here and abroad, among Protestant dialecticians. Wherever the doctrines of Calvin found adherents, his writings, widely printed, were seized upon to buttress a crumbling orthodoxy that still has significant historic importance. That much of his intellectual vigor and acumen spent itself in defense of issues long since dead is beside the point.”

Some seventy years later, Edwards continues to attract new readers with a wide range of interests including the very ones Johnson claimed were dead! In the intervening years—a period that includes the publication of the fabled and definitive Yale Edition—many new editions of Edwards’s works have appeared to meet the demands of scholars, theologians, pastors, students, and other readers.

In preparation for the 2003 tercentenary of Jonathan Edwards’s birth, noted Edwards scholar M. X. Lesser prepared a comprehensive revision of Johnson’s bibliography. Regrettably, internal discussions related to the future of the Studies in Reformed Theology and History series led to a delay in distributing Lesser’s The Printed Writings of Jonathan Edwards 1703–1758: A Bibliography.

Lesser’s “revised edition” represents a complete reworking of Johnson’s 1940 bibliography and nearly doubles its size. Here readers will find complete documentation of every publication of Jonathan Edwards’s writings. This volume will be the standard bibliography for decades to come. A copy belongs in every library with an interest in research on America’s first great thinker.

M. X. Lesser is Professor Emeritus at Northeastern University. He has published numerous works on Jonathan Edwards, including two bibliographies of secondary literature. He also edited volume nineteen of the Works of Jonathan Edwards: Sermons and Discourses 1734–1738, published by Yale University Press in 2001.
