GEORGE DAVIE ESSAY PRIZE
The George Davie Prize Essay Competition for a hitherto unpublished essay on a selected theme is named in commemoration of George Elder Davie (1912-2007) author of The Democratic Intellect (1962) and Honorary Editor of the Journal of Scottish Philosophy until his death, the winning submission will secure publication in the journal and a prize of $1000.

The theme for the first competition was "Scottish philosophy in the 19th century", expressly chosen with Davie's work and interests in mind.

The second competition is for an essay on Scottish Aesthetics. Scottish philosophy, especially in the eighteenth century, regularly addressed questions related to themes that now fall under the discipline of philosophical aesthetics.  Thinkers including Hutcheson, Hume, Reid, Duff, Kames, Stewart, Alison, Gerard and Smith all made notable contributions to a variety of issues, including the nature of beauty and sublimity, the gothic, taste and whether there is a standard for aesthetic judgment, tragedy, genius, and criticism. Entries are invited on any subject and/or author related to this theme.   The winning entry will be published in a themed issue of the journal guest edited by Andrew Chignell, Cornell University and Timothy Costelloe, College of William and Mary

Deadline for initial submission: April 1st 2010

THE OXFORD HISTORY OF SCOTTISH PHILOSOPHY
in three volumes

The Princeton Center for the Study of Scottish Philosophy is pleased to announce publication agreement with Oxford University Press for a new comprehensive, multi-authored history of Scottish philosophy in three volumes.

The Oxford History of Scottish Philosophy is the first work of this kind. Each volume of will comprise substantial essays that aim to combine historical understanding and philosophical analysis in a way that both informs readers and enables them to engage with the diversity and variety of this remarkable intellectual tradition. Volume One will explore the medieval origins of Scottish philosophy in a European context, and the emergence of moral philosophy from Calvinist theology. Volume Two will offer a new and comprehensive treatment of the philosophy and philosophers of the Scottish Enlightenment. Volume Three will trace the development and eventual transformation of the 18th century 'science of mind' into the Idealist metaphysics and empirical psychology of the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as the reception and influence of Scottish philosophy abroad.

An international team of editors and advisers has been established and will recruit a range of authors that includes both recognized authorities and new scholars in the field. An important feature of the project is a series of conferences in which editors and authors have the opportunity to discuss draft chapters.

Publication of The Oxford History of Scottish Philosophy is expected in 2013.
