EditPlease note: this page is in-process and reflects older policy decisions.
As far as call number assignments there are three systems that we use: two for
microfiche and one for
microfilm.
1.
Microfiche get a sequential number made up of the word “Microfiche,” the calendar year, a hyphen and a 4-digit number.
For example, the first microfiche cataloged last year was:
Microfiche 2007-0001. These are the call numbers for microfiche that are individual titles, not large sets.
For
large microfiche sets, the previous Head Cataloger was using the numbers found on the microfiche assigned by the publisher. For the IDC collections, he grouped them by the IDC numbers and kept specific IDC collections together. (We may need to take a closer look at these large microfiche sets already in the cabinets since these sets are not labeled.)
2.
Microfilm also gets a sequential number made up of the word “Microfilm” and a 4-digit number.
For example,
Microfilm 3578 is the call number for
Journal of theology for Southern Africa. If there is more than one reel a colon and a number is added: 3578:1, 3578:2, etc. Ella maintains the list of microfilm call numbers. As we used a number we cross it off her list.
While there was no documented policy, this is the basic pattern I found in the microform cabinets 2002.
