[This policy needs revision]

We have not been doing much authority work except for original cataloging due to the emphasis on productivity during the reclass project. Also, because of the large amount of materials we acquire each year, we do not have time to check every access point on member contributed copy in OCLC (The headings on LC copy conform to the LC authority file’s authorized forms and so they do not need to be checked). At this point we will not add authority work to our workflow until we have fully explored the following options:

1. Authority processing to be done by an authority control vendor (LTI, for example)

2. OCLC’s new software is supposed to verify headings (This may mean that we can be assured that the headings are already in the authorized form.)

3. Voyager’s global change capability

If you see a name, series title, or subject heading on a bibliographic record that does not look quite right, go to the LC authority file in OCLC to check for the authorized form. Make any corrections as necessary in the bibliographic record. If the name/title/subject is complex and needs cross references in the OPAC, import the authority record for that name/title/subject. Be sure to check in Voyager first to make sure that the authority record is not already in the system. To do this choose “Retrieve Authorities” from the “Record” drop down menu when you have the imported bibliographic record displayed in Voyager. If it is not there then export the authority record from OCLC and import into Voyager.
