We use the 852 subfield z (public note) to provide information about multiple copies. Subfield z is input after the call number ($h and $i) in the holdings record. Please follow the wording in this example.
852 8 $b aSpeerRef $k REF $h BS440 $i .N432 2001 $z Copies 1-2
852 8 $b aSpeerRef $k REF $h BS440 $i .N432 2001 $z Copies 1-3
If you have other copy-specific notes about an item you may improvise the wording. There is a book in the Cataloging Department,
Notes for Catalogers, by Salinger & Zagon, which contains good examples.
This note appears right under the call number in the OPAC.
EditSubfield t in the (MFHD) Holdings Record
Old local practice: We use to use subfield t in the holdings record for copy information.
Current local practice: In Voyager we now put copy information in the item record for things that are barcoded and circulate. We also add a copy note in the holdings record.
(Another option we may want to consider in the future is to create an item record without a barcode in order to record the copy information for non-circulating items.)
